Eskdalemuir – In its own league!

Eskdalemuir is a place where people need to know how to look after themselves, and when they need looking after, their community is absolutely crucial.

D&G Climate Hub’s Steven Clark first met with Upper Eskdalemuir Development Group’s Lara Porter and her team in Eskdalemuir’s Old School Hub & Café  some two years ago.  In a community hub like that, the term ‘official working hours’ is more of a concept than a rule. Lara therefore puts a lot of hours, energy, and indefatigable positivity into her Hub manager role and as a result, her efforts, and the resulting energy generated by the entire team has created a real buzz about Eskdalemuir that defies the remoteness of their location.

Furthermore, Lara’s efforts were rightfully recognised when she was awarded Dumfries & Galloway Life Community Champion Award.

Years of working to provide support for her community. Years of volunteering her time for the myriad of activities and events she and her remarkable team have managed to arrange, broadening the scope of community support in terms of community planning, climate change resilience, and even as a place of comfort, warmth and good company during the socially isolating cold winter days up on ‘the muir.’

Lara and her team have helped energize the community with a Hub they can all be proud of, and a Hub that is extending the name of the Old School Hub & Café near and far with performing artists, travellers and tourists, and groups looking for a conference venue.

Congratulations on the D&G Life Award win Lara, and congratulations also to that amazing wee community up there on Eskdalemuir.
